The challenge to architecture students from Unitec sounded simple: design a bird hide. But trustee John Sumich had other ideas: “I have a site for a bird hide. It has lots of lovely issues to make students think – the site can be flooded; the bank edge is probably unstable and the morning light might make observers visible to any birds on the water”.
After initial surveying, photographing the site and materiality studies, the students came back with some impressive results, which were displayed at Unitec. The students came up with innovative designs, new ways of thinking and the results are definitely inspiring. Below some pictures which don’t do them justice…
Now all we have to do is select the winner from the six finalists and find some money to built it! It would be a great asset for our visitors.
