Waitakere Cadets practising their possum skills

Earlier this year we were contacted by Jeff Berriman, Service Academy Director at our local Waitakere College. He was looking for a new location for his cadets to practice their newly learned skills in predator control: setting and clearing DOC200 traps and working with leg hold traps to catch possums, to skin for their fur. At Matuku Link we’ll never let an education opportunity slip away and after some instruction from trustee John Staniland, a former teacher himself, they are now helping us to protect our native flora and fauna.

Hopefully it will inspire them to do conservation work for many years to come, either as a volunteer or in a professional capacity.
