Saturday 31st October 8pm - Starry Night at Matuku Link
Come and join us for the first edition of Matuku Nights: five nighttime activities during the summer months, starting with Starry Night on the 31st of October. A night full of stars, telescopes, Māori stories and the majestical beauty of the night sky. Where conservation, education history and neck cramps come together.
The evening will be hosted by Gareth Davies and Olive Karena-Lockyer. Gareth is Executive Director of Dark Sky New Zealand and member of the Waitākere Ranges Dark Sky Group. He will bring his digital telescope and share his knowledge about about stars, the night sky and astronomy.
Olive is a prominent Māori astronomy educator at Te Whatu Stardome. She will tell us about mātai arorangi (Māori astronomy) and the maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar). Viewing stars not only through a telescope’s lens, but a Māori lens as well.
We will close the evening with some hot drinks and snacks around a campfire.
Starry night will start at 8:00 pm and will end around 10:00 pm. Bring some warm clothes and a torch.
