This working bee Sunday started with fog, clouds and drizzle…and it is the last day of the school holidays, so I didn’t expect many helping hands. It turned out to be the opposite! Some Kiwi Conservation Club (www.kcc.org.nz) families, raising the next generation of conservationists, as well as members of the North Shore branch of Forest & Bird, came and joined our merry band of volunteers and trappers.
After Annalily checked everyone’s soles and shoes for any traces of mud and possible spread of kauri dieback disease, Trustee John Sumich had a whole list of tasks in mind for the group. From moving the old roof tin to a new spot to hauling cut willows and alders to the fire pile. Another group started on rescuing last year’s plants from being overgrown and finished with planting our own home grown Hebe’s in gaps. The team with Colleen and Derek at the nursery potted, weeded and planted next year’s seedlings. Everyone got together in the first rays of sun of the day for our shared lunch, which was a copious feast as usual!
If you’d like to join us next time, our working bees are always on the 3rd Sunday of the month: the 19th of May, 16th of June and 21st of July, starting at 10 am. Super clean shoes are a must, and the shared lunch is optional but definitely recommended.
Thank you all for donating your time and energy to the environment!
