A passionate conservationist and generous philanthropist, left his house to his best friend, who is one of our trustees. In turn, he donated the house, which was going to be demolised, to Matuku Link to be used as materials for the Sustainable Wetland Education Center. Last two Sundays a group of handy volunteers brought power tools and man power to the site and rescued native timber flooring, doors, a toilet and as many other bits and pieces we could think of.
We discovered that houses build in the 1940’s were solidly made, that everything was screwed with one size flat screw driver, that railway irons make great floor joist and the most amazing wallpaper for a bird lover.
Grateful for the gift of this house by someone who lived frugally to be able to share as much as possible, and for a chance to keep his memory alive in the materials we are reusing.
