Open Studio

The wetland restoration project Matuku Link was an out door studio for professional artist and Matuku Link volunteer Derek March for five months. From February to June 2023 he designed, then painted a mural on a 35 meter long fence separating the wetland education area from the existing rangers’ house. The story of the Waitakere River and all human activities along the river over the past centennia are depicted, with many of the rivers’ native inhabitants.

Especially for the Waitakere Open Studio Weekend, Derek will be on site to talk about this public artwork and show other works. His paintings and sculptures will be on display at Matuku Link’s Wetland Education Center. Visitors are welcome to view his works, ask questions and do a self-guided tour or join a guided tour of the restored wetland at 111 Bethells Road.

Derek’s love of nature and concern for the conservation of the natural environment, particularly wetlands is reflected in his work. He will be showing a selection of present and past work including drawings, paintings and sculpture, which will all be for sale.

Both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of November Matuku Link will be open for visitors, with home baking and hot & cold drinks for sale to fundraise for this community wetland conservation project.
